What to Do When You’d Rather Lie in Bed Than Homeschool

It’s a lazy morning, you don’t want to get out of bed, you don’t want to teach your children, but you’re Mrs. Schoolmom and you have to.

I know how you feel.

I’ve been there.

Some days, as with any job, we just don’t feel like working. With homeschooling though, the good news is that you’re your own boss.

If you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, rather than add a cranky overtone to your children’s homeschooling day, better to take the day off.

A perk to homeschooling — and there are many — is that we schoolmoms make all of the decisions. No one tells us how to raise and educate our children. No one tells us what to teach, and no one tells us when to teach.

What liberty a loosened spirit brings!

— Emily Dickinson

On blasé days (I’m having one today as it is grey and wet outside, though my kids are grown), you can tell your kids it’s a free reading day. Also, you can take them to the park, take them to the library, take them for a quiet walk in nature, or take them out for coffee.

That’s what I used to do when I was having an off day and had no outside activities planned with other families.

My favorite, I confess, was the coffee shop. I’d head to Peet’s Coffee and, once there, I pulled out what books we’d brought, usually grammar and math (I do believe in teaching children core subjects whether kids like it or not), and we got to work.

My kids loved “coffee day” (they had hot chocolate).

Sometimes, it’s just a matter of changing the scenery to restore your energy.

But if you really don’t feel up to anything that day, don’t feel guilty. There are no homeschooling police that will come after you, there are no tests your children might flunk, nor will you fail them.

Your kids will still get a good education, even if you take an extra day off now and then. They might even get a better one.
